what3words is based on a global grid of 57 trillion 3mx3m squares where each square has been assigned a unique 3 word address. This means that people can receive deliveries, diseases can be managed more effectively and friends and business can be found easily.

How they’re disrupting

3 words are easier to remember & communicate than the 16 numbers of GPS (which only locate 25% of the world’s population with a high degree of error), more flexible than dropping a pin and more accurate than street addressing. It is a universal and human-friendly system. An ecosystem of apps, site and an API available via a software licence, the system is in multiple languages, works offline and has built in error detection.

Disruption potential

75% of the world’s population do not have an address system and 4bn people dont have an actual address. In developed countries poor addressing is frustrating and costs business billions, in the developing world it costs lives.

Investments and future

Having received $5 million in seed, including funds from Intel Capital and Horizons Ventures, over the past 2 years, what3words is now gathering pace with a number of new partnerships announced from USAID and UN to award winning transit planner TripGo. This will enable them to roll out of the what3words platform to a much wider audience.
