Watson is a technology platform that uses natural language processing and machine learning to analyse unstructured data including news articles, research reports, social media posts and enterprise system data.
How they’re disrupting
IBM’s Watson software first ‘learns’ a new subject through the input of related materials and relevant questions and answers in the form of PDF’s, documents or web pages. It then uses a scoring algorithm to rate the quality of this evidence and provides ranked answers based on the quality assessment, enabling medical experts to gain new insights at an individual to entire population level, adding confidence to their decision-making and diagnoses.
There are 35 million healthcare professionals worldwide.
Investments and future
IBM are opening a headquarters location for the new unit in the Boston area and to expand its Watson presence in New York City. They plan to dedicate at least 2000 consultants, medical practitioners, clinicians, developers and researchers to design, develop and accelerate the adoption of Watson Health capabilities.
